Star Wars Celebration closes with Episode VIII, young Han Solo and celebrity dogs
Star Wars Celebration Europe wrapped up on Sunday with a panel about the future Star Wars movies – Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s film about a young Han Solo. The panel was not on the live stream schedule, leading some to optimistically speculate that some new information about the future of the Star Wars cinematic universe would be revealed. Instead, the panel leaned more on special guests Alden Ehrenreich, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and two dogs.
Moderator Pablo Hidalgo (of Lucasfilm) started off by talking to director Rian Johnson, who is just wrapping up filming Star Wars: Episode VIII, production name Space Bear. There was a big wrap party recently for most of the crew, but Johnson is finishing up principal photography and moving into the post-production process.
Johnson told the audience that pre-production on Episode VIII had to start very early because of Disney’s Star Wars release schedule being so tight. When he wrote the first draft of Episode VIII, he was working off the Episode VII script and dailies from the first film. By the time there was positive audience reaction to The Force Awakens, Johnson had already come up with this story, so Episode VIII was constructed without any undo pressure. Besides the pressure inherent in directing something as big as Star Wars.

The director confirmed that his movie would pick up directly where The Force Awakens ended, which would be a first for the Star Wars franchise. This calls into question the opening crawl and what it’s going to have to say at the beginning of the movie (“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away…nothing new has happened.”).

Johnson didn’t address the crawl, but did elaborate that Episode VIII would be the movie that focuses in on the characters of the sequel trilogy more. Before he started directing the movie, he gave Lucasfilm a list of movies he wanted his Star Wars installment to feel like. That list included 12 O’clock High, Bridge of the River Kwai, Three Outlaw Samurai, and Gunga Din.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller took the stage to talk about their 2018 Star Wars Story movie that will feature a young Han Solo. Before bringing out Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar) to officially announce he had won the role, the two discussed being Star Wars fans and how they saw the character of Han Solo. They expect to start shooting their movie at the end of January 2017.

Then, the directors started to reveal that they all attempted to make cameos in each other’s films. Rian Johnson is playing a Death Star gunner in Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One, Edwards has an unspecified cameo in Episode VIII, and Lord and Miller got all costumed up to appear in Rogue One, but had to leave the set before they made it on camera.

Alden Ehrenreich was announced as officially the new Han Solo. Lord and Miller said that he was the first to audition, then they saw thousands of other actors before giving him the part. Ehrenreich’s mother was moving recently and had found some of his Star Wars toys, including a Han Solo action figure and a Bossk action figure. Because Ehrenreich is 26, it turned out to be 90s versions of Star Wars toys.

Surprise guest John Boyega showed up and didn’t say anything about Episode VIII except that Finn is not in a coma the whole film (which is technically new information?). There had already been photos of Boyega on set with a stunt actress standing in for Kelly Marie Tran who has an unspecified role in Episode VIII. Tran randomly came up in conversation with Boyega, but no nuggets of information slipped out.

Finally, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher made a surprise appearance with their dogs Millie and Gary Fisher. The two dominant personalities managed to hold the stage for the remainder without saying much of anything about future Star Wars movies outside of that they’d like to see more pets in the universe.

Without having a live stream to go off, a lot of the charm of these individual creatives got lost in the retweets and blurry photos. Usually, when a panel with subject matter that interesting to the public at large isn’t streamed, it’s because there is information at the panel that the organizers consider special to attendees only. For a weekend that was so widely streamed over three days, it felt weird to have a panel with no classified information to be left off the streaming schedule, especially with the Han Solo announcement and John Boyega special appearance.
