Star Wars Celebration Europe opened up this year with a focus on the next cinematic installment in the franchise, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the first Star Wars Universe anthology movie follows Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) as she goes on a mission for the Rebellion that leads her team to the Death Star plans that are so central to the plot of A New Hope.

A single teaser was bestowed upon us before Celebration and we got a sizzle reel during a Rogue One panel where we got to meet our heroes and learn their names. Also of interest in the Rogue One sphere is the props and costumes display on the convention floor. Last year, we got our first close up look at Kylo Ren’s cross-saber and the new First Order troops with The Force Awakens. This year, the Empire of Rogue One rolled out all the cool gadgets and outfits they’ll be using to take on the rebels.

Stormtroopers

These guys are your tried-and-true original trilogy era white Stormtroopers. After spending a year obsessing over a First Order trooper design, these guys feel like classic Star Wars. They will be getting a lot more toys and gadgets than we saw them with in A New Hope, even if the Tanktrooper costume wasn’t on display, we’ve seen the trailers and we know it’s there.

Shoretroopers

After Donnie Yen uploaded a very early photo of three different Stormtrooper helmets from Rogue One (the same three that we’re talking about here!), debate raged as to what the tan one on the far left was. The tone made it look like a trooper that would fight in a desert, so some people started calling them “Sandtroopers” or “Scarabtroopers” expecting more arid climates. Instead, these guys are “Shoretroopers” and we see them in the behind the scenes clip doing battle at Scariff. Which should have been obvious, Stormtroopers aren’t about camouflage like the actual military, why would we assume tan troopers had to be in sand?

Deathtroopers

With Star Wars: Rebels beginning to bring old parts of the Expanded Universe back into the main canon, the initial thought were that these black armored troopers would be the Shadowtroopers of old. The real name is much creepier. The Deathtroopers are Director Krennic’s elite force. Their black armor has some green ambient lights built in and they’ll be very creepy when contrasted against the Director’s stark white outfit.

Director Krennic

You saw it on the live stream in glorious motion, but a closer look at Director Krennic’s outfit really inspires hope that we’ll see him as the leader of the Imperial Security Bureau tasked with overseeing some aspect of the Death Star creation. We know from the novels that Grand Moff Tarkin was in charge of the project, and from common sense that Jyn’s mission is a secret, so we really don’t know what Krennic’s ultimate goal is. Just that all the color text about Rogue One makes him sound ruthless, smart and dangerous.

TIE Striker

“A streamlined variant of the classic TIE Fighter design, the TIE striker is designed for atmospheric patrols over important Imperial ground base installations. The versatile design can also soar in space, where it can accompany traditional TIE fighters in chasing down enemy ships.”

The interesting thing about the new ships is that they are designs that haven’t been echoed throughout the other films. That’s the weird thing about doing a prequel that leads into A New Hope: where did all the TIE strikers go? If we really want to be nitpicky on the movie’s side, the original trilogy never took us to an Imperial ground base installation that wasn’t secretly a trap (I’m referring to the shield generator base in Return of the Jedi). Maybe TIE strikers were on the core worlds while the Saga movies were taking place on the Outer Rim?

Krennic’s Imperial Shuttle

“With its starkly geometric hull shape and folding bat-like wings, the approach of the Delta class T3c shuttle is an imposing sight. Once it lands and deploys its passengers – the cruel Director Krennic and his squad of elite troopers, all sense of dread proves extremely warranted.”

We haven’t seen these “bat-like” wings folded up yet, so I’m not sure how this shuttle even lands inside the Death Star with such a wing span. Also, if you want, google “Vulcan shuttle Star Trek” and look at the angular design. Krennic’s shuttle does vaguely resemble the over-winged shape of Kylo Ren’s shuttle in The Force Awakens mixed with a stealth version of the original series Imperial Shuttle.

Imperial AT-ACT Cargo Walker

walker

The Larger version of the standard AT-AT, the AT-ACT walker features a dedicated cargo bed for the transportation of heavy building materials or combat munitions. It was deployed at major Imperial construction projects, such as shipyards and sprawling research installations

The AT-ACT not being on Endor during Return of the Jedi only makes sense because the AT-ACT is bigger than the AT-AT and already the trees of Endor were troublesome to traverse at speed. Considering we’ve seen the AT-ACT in action on the planet Scarif in the Rogue One trailer, it’s safe to say that they also would have looked out of place on Hoth with the orange accents on the design. Just what is being transported around Scarif is still a mystery, as is how much water these AT-ACTs can walk through before being encumbered (not hinting at a spoiler, genuinely curious).
