Defenders

Marvel held their Netflix panel of heroes on Thursday at Comic-Con in San Diego. Uniting the cast of September’s Luke Cage on stage for the first time, announcing a new season of Daredevil, the first look at Iron Fist and a logo and teaser for the team-up The Defenders! They showed a surprising amount of footage, some of which is available, the rest is described.

The panel opened with a sizzle reel showing off the Netflix heroes we’ve met so far: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Frank Castle:

Then it was time to bring out the cast of Luke Cage’s titular series. They started by bringing out the supporting characters starting with Frank Whaley as Detective Scarfe, the partner to Misty Knight (another Marvel hero getting her first live action adaptation). Theo Rossi plays Shades, and had to borrow some sunglasses (come on, man!). Simone Missick, who will be playing Misty Knight and Mahershala Ali (playing Cornell Stokes aka Cottonmouth) also took the stage before Alfre Woodard (“Black Mariah” Dillard on the show) and Mike Colter (Luke Cage himself) rounded out the panel.

They revealed that Rosario Dawson’s character from previous Netflix series, Claire Temple, would be appearing in Luke Cage, but Dawson was currently in New York shooting “something else Marvel,” which must be Iron Fist.

The cast and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker (previously of Ray Donovan, Southland) talked about the characters and series as a whole, occasionally introducing clips. The cast members spoke to how important Harlem was to the story they were telling and Coker talked up how important music was, calling Luke Cage the “Wu Tang-fication of the Marvel universe.” Apparently, each episode will be titled after a different gangster rap song.

The Hall H audience was treated to an extended version of the boxing ring teaser scene that came after the Jessica Jones finale episode.

After that, he interrogates one of Cottonmouth’s men about where “the weapons” are, threatening to throw him into the Hudson River: “It’s not the fall that kills you. It’s the impact against the water. And when the water fills your lungs right before you black out, you’ll think to yourself: why didn’t I just give Luke Cage what he wanted?”

The audience also got to see a clip of Cottonmouth and Black Mariah, who are cousins, fighting. They both apparently break a bunch of things in a bar in anger with Black Mariah arguing that Cottonmouth can always make more money, but she can’t get her name back if it’s tarnished.

There was a steamy clip that showed a romance between Luke Cage and Misty Knight, right after Missick described her character: “She’s funny, fiery, she’s a little bit bold and brash… This is this iconic woman who is so strong and self-assured. It’s so refreshing to see a woman who’s her own person. She’s not a wife, she’s not the girlfriend, she’s her own thing.” Mixed signals or a plot wrinkle that needs to be sussed out? That remains to be seen.

The next scene introduced the threat of Cornell Stokes, AKA Cottonmouth, the primary antagonist. Or that’s what his scene portrayed. Stokes monologues in front of a portrait of the Notorious B.I.G. in a crown and ends with “Cause everybody wants to be the king.” Then he violently punches someone off screen, asking for his money. When they reveal the man, he is tied to a chair and his face is a bloody mess.

The Luke Cage part of the panel wrapped up with a reminder that the whole season drops worldwide on Netflix this September 30th before we all got this new teaser:

Jeph Loeb, moderator of the panel and one of those in charge of Marvel TV quickly rattled off the news that Daredevil had been picked up by Netflix for season three before launching into Comic-Con exclusive Iron Fist footage!

… and an ominous voice saying “Hello, Danny.”

As all four Defenders had been revealed (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist), there was a short Defenders teaser!

The Defenders will be released on Netflix in 2017…but an exact date wasn’t given.

That’s a pretty jam-packed panel considering it was just representing a small sliver of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
